The SD interface, originally known as Secure Digital, was developed in the late 1990s. Due to its use in the high volume consumer electronics market, it is by far the most used interface today. The low pin count serial bus of the SD interface makes it ideal for small form factor designs. Many of the embedded processors come standard with the SD interface built-in for ease of implementation.
